      A cigarra NÃO canta até explodir! :) - Instituto Últimos Refúgios

      10 Mar 2016

      Vídeo que produzimos sobre as cigarras;
      Explicando que a cigarra não canta até explodir! :)

      Time-lapse realizado no Instituto Terra, em Aimorés-MG.

      As fêmeas põem seus ovos e morrem logo depois. Após os ovos eclodirem, os insetos jovens (ou "ninfas") caem no chão e entram na terra. As ninfas vivem na terra por 1 a 17 anos (depende da espécie) se alimentando da seiva de raízes. Depois desse período, elas cavam túneis, sobem nas árvores e sofrem uma metamorfose, a ecdise, se tornando adultas e prontas para o acasalamento.
      A importância da cigarra no ecossistema é positiva, por um lado, por servir de alimento para os predadores e, negativa, por outro, porque constitui-se em pragas de algumas culturas. As suas ninfas vivem alimentando-se da seiva das raízes das plantas, causando sensíveis prejuízos pela quantidade de líquidos vitais que retiram e pelos ferimentos causados às raízes, facilitando a penetração de fungos e bactérias.
      Muitas espécies de cigarra têm períodos diferentes de amadurecimento, com ciclos vitais de duração variada, enquanto as larvas ficam sob a terra. Mas sete espécies do gênero Magicicada têm uma característica adicional: elas são sincronizadas, ou seja, saem do chão todas ao mesmo tempo, para cerca de duas semanas de canto ensurdecedor, acasalamento e postura de ovos.

      --------------- ENGLISH TRANSLATION ----------------
      Timelapse made at the Instituto Terra in Aimorés, MG.

      The female cricket lays her eggs and dies soon after. After the babies hatch the young insects (or "nymphs") fall to the ground and bury oneself in the soil. The nymphs live under the earth for 1 to 17 years (depending on the species) feeding on the juice of roots. After this period, they dig tunnels, climb trees and undergo a metamorphosis, ecdysis, becoming mature and ready for mating.
      The cricket is important for the ecosystem. On the one hand they serve as food for predators, on the other hand they are held as pests in some cultures. Nymphs feeding on the juice of plant roots can cause damage depending on the amount of vital liquids they drink. The injuries the roots suffer facilitate the penetration of fungi and bacteria.
      Many species of crickets have different growrth phases with life cycles of varying lengths, while the larvae lives underground. But seven species of the genus Magicicada have an additional characteristic: they are synchronized, i.e. all emerge from the ground at the same time in order to chirp, mate and lay eggs.
