A Brazilian Guinea Pig (locally known as the preá) from the Caatinga dry forests of Northeast Brazil. The species has a wide distribution in open savannas and gallery forests of South America (in the Llanos of Venezuela-Colombia, the Brazilian Cerrado and Caatinga biomes, the Pampas del Heath in Perú, and the Gran Chaco of Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina). Due to its wide distribution, the Brazilian Guinea Pig is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN
